The two most recognizable premium tequila brands in the world. Both owned by massive spirits conglomerates. Both marketed as premium. Crystal and Roger compare them directly — and then tell you what to buy instead.
The Bottles (Blanco comparison)
Patrón Silver: Jalisco, 40% ABV, ~$45. Owned by Bacardi. Made using a tahona stone wheel — a traditional agave crushing method. NOM 1492.
Don Julio Blanco: Jalisco, 40% ABV, ~$50. Owned by Diageo. Named after Don Julio González, who planted his agave fields in a widely-spaced pattern to improve quality. NOM 1449.
The Additive Question
Neither Patrón nor Don Julio is additive-free certified by the Additive Free Alliance. Both are produced at scale by multinational spirits conglomerates where additives are common practice for consistency. This doesn't mean either bottle is bad — but it does mean you're paying premium prices for brand recognition, not necessarily terroir-driven agave purity.
Nose
Patrón Silver: clean agave, light citrus, subtle vegetal notes, consistent. The tahona process adds slight earthiness. Don Julio Blanco: sweeter nose, citrus, cooked agave, mild pepper. Approachable and clean.
Palate
Patrón Silver: light body, clean agave, mild citrus finish, slightly thin at 40% ABV. Don Julio Blanco: smoother entry, sweet mid-palate, clean finish. Both designed for cocktail versatility and broad appeal rather than sipping complexity.
The Verdict — and the Better Alternative
Don Julio Blanco slightly edges Patrón on smoothness and complexity. But Crystal and Roger's real recommendation: at $45-50, both are outperformed by additive-free alternatives. LALO Tequila Blanco ($45) delivers more honest agave character than either. Yéyo Silver ($38) outperforms both on flavor per dollar. You're paying for the name with Patrón and Don Julio. You're paying for the liquid with LALO and Yéyo.
