🍇 SPIRIT 101: COGNAC & ARMAGNAC
Cognac is the most famous brandy in the world. Armagnac is France's oldest. Both are made from grapes in southwestern France — but they are produced in different ways, have different characters, and tell different stories. This guide covers both.
What is Brandy?
Brandy is simply distilled wine or fermented fruit juice. It can be made anywhere in the world from almost any fruit. But the most celebrated brandies in the world come from France — Cognac (from the Cognac region) and Armagnac (from Gascony). Think of brandy as the umbrella, and Cognac and Armagnac as the premium sub-categories.
Cognac: The Famous One
Cognac is made in the Charente region of France, double-distilled in copper pot stills, and aged in French oak. The age designations: VS (Very Special): Aged at least 2 years. VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale): Aged at least 4 years. XO (Extra Old): Aged at least 10 years. Hors d'Âge: Beyond the legal age requirement — indefinite aging. The six growing sub-regions of Cognac are ranked by soil quality. Grande Champagne (the top tier, where Pierre Ferrand is produced) has chalky soils that produce the most delicate, floral cognacs with exceptional aging potential.
Armagnac: The Original
Armagnac predates Cognac by over a century and is France's oldest distilled spirit. Unlike Cognac's double-distillation in pot stills, Armagnac is traditionally made using a continuous column still called an alambic armagnacais — giving it a more rustic, full-flavored character. If Cognac is Beyoncé (polished, universally celebrated), Armagnac is Solange (equally talented, more artisanal, and incredibly underrated). Armagnac de Montal, reviewed on this show, is an excellent introduction.
