About Planteray Originalé
Planteray Originalé is a blended rum that brings together distillates from Trinidad, Jamaica, Guyana, and Barbados — each contributing a different aspect of the flavor profile. The Trinidad base provides lightness and clean sweetness; the Jamaican component adds funk and complexity; the Demerara from Guyana brings depth; the Barbadian element contributes elegance. It's a seriously constructed blend that drinks above its price point.
The Glasvin Factor
The Glasvin glass is designed with the same principle as a Glencairn — a tulip shape that concentrates aromatics toward the nose and slows down the spirit's volatilization. Crystal and Roger taste the Planteray in a standard rocks glass and then in the Glasvin, and the difference in nose performance is significant. The rum opens up in ways that a rocks glass simply doesn't facilitate.
Tasting Notes — Nose, Palate, Finish
Nose: Tropical fruit, brown sugar, and a hint of the Jamaican funk — much more expressive in the Glasvin. Palate: Balanced and complex for a spirit at this price, with dried fruit, vanilla, and a light molasses character weaving together. Finish: Medium, with sweetness fading into a pleasant warmth.
🥃 Crystal & Roger's LC Recommendations
For rum exploration: Planteray Originalé is one of the best value entry points into premium blended rum. It shows what careful blending can achieve.
On glassware: Invest in a set of Glencairns or Glasvins. The aromatics difference when you nose a spirit properly is not subtle — it's significant.
As a pairing: Planteray with dark chocolate is excellent. The rum's tropical fruit and molasses character bridges to chocolate naturally.
LC Verdict
A smart pairing episode that makes two educational points simultaneously: quality rum doesn't have to be expensive, and the right glass genuinely changes what you experience.
