Rum FAQ — The Most-Asked Rum Questions Answered | The Liquor Connoisseur®

The most-asked rum questions — answered by Crystal and Roger of The Liquor Connoisseur®.

What is the difference between white rum, dark rum, and aged rum?

White (or silver) rum is typically unaged or lightly filtered after aging — clean, light, and ideal for cocktails. Dark rum is heavily aged and often colored with caramel, producing rich molasses and dried fruit notes. Aged rum is simply rum that has spent significant time in oak barrels, developing complexity regardless of color.

What is agricole rum?

Agricole rum is made from fresh sugarcane juice rather than molasses — the byproduct of sugar refining. This creates a distinctly grassy, vegetal, and terroir-driven spirit that's very different from molasses-based rums. Produced primarily in Martinique and Guadeloupe, it has its own appellation system (AOC Martinique Rhum Agricole).

What is the best rum for someone who doesn't like rum?

Mount Gay Black Barrel — a Barbados rum finished in bourbon barrels — is Crystal and Roger's top recommendation for whiskey drinkers exploring rum. The bourbon cask finish creates familiar vanilla and caramel notes that bridge the gap. Ten to One Caribbean White Rum is their pick for clean, premium sipping that changes how you think about white rum.

What is overproof rum?

Overproof rum is bottled at significantly higher than standard proof — typically 126 proof (63% ABV) or higher. Bacardi 151 was the most famous example, though it was discontinued. Overproof rum is used in cocktails where you want intense rum flavor without adding too much volume, and in flamed cocktails.

What makes Flor de Caña rum special?

Flor de Caña is a Nicaraguan rum produced at the base of an active volcano — Momotombo — using volcanic spring water and aged in American white oak. It's one of the most awarded rums in the world and a B Corp certified sustainable producer. Crystal and Roger reviewed it and called it essential for serious rum enthusiasts.
