The Perfect Manhattan Recipe — Why Rye Whiskey Makes It Better | The Liquor Connoisseur®

The Manhattan is rye whiskey's cocktail — built specifically to showcase the spice and complexity that rye brings to a stirred drink. Crystal and Roger use Michter's Single Barrel Straight Rye as their house Manhattan whiskey.

Why Michter's Single Barrel Rye Is the Manhattan Rye

Michter's Single Barrel Straight Rye is the World's Most Admired Whiskey (Drinks International, two years running). In a Manhattan, the rye's spice plays against sweet vermouth's fruit and bitterness in exactly the way the cocktail was designed. Michter's has enough complexity at 42.4% ABV to hold up to vermouth without being overwhelmed — and its single barrel variation means every bottle has individual character.

The Recipe

Ingredients:

• 2 oz Michter's Single Barrel Straight Rye • 1 oz sweet vermouth (Carpano Antica or Cocchi Torino preferred) • 2 dashes Angostura bitters • 1 dash orange bitters • Luxardo Maraschino cherry for garnish • Orange peel (optional)

Method:

Combine all liquid ingredients in a mixing glass with ice. Stir 30-40 rotations until well-chilled. Strain into a chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass. Garnish with a Luxardo cherry. Express an orange peel over the glass if desired.

The Vermouth Matters More Than You Think

Most bad Manhattans are bad because of cheap sweet vermouth. Vermouth is wine — once opened it oxidizes within weeks. Keep it refrigerated and replace it within 2-3 weeks. Carpano Antica Formula is Crystal and Roger's top pick for Manhattan vermouth — rich, vanilla-forward, and complex enough to be a sipping vermouth on its own.

The Bourbon Manhattan Alternative

A bourbon Manhattan works beautifully with Uncle Nearest 1884 — the honeyed sweetness and vanilla of the bourbon plays differently against the vermouth than rye's spice. Try both and decide which you prefer. Crystal and Roger serve bourbon Manhattans at every private tasting when the group includes people newer to spirit-forward cocktails.
