Scotch 101: Regions, Single Malt vs Blended, and How to Find Your Pour

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 SPIRIT 101: SCOTCH WHISKY

Scotch has a reputation for being intimidating — complex, expensive, and hard to decode. But once you understand the basics, it becomes one of the most rewarding categories in all of spirits. This guide gives you everything you need to start or deepen your Scotch journey.

What Makes It Scotch?

Scotch must be: Made entirely in Scotland. Aged at least 3 years in oak casks. Bottled at a minimum of 40% ABV. It is made primarily from malted barley (single malt) or a mix of grains (blended). Note the spelling: Scotch is whisky without the 'e' — Irish and American styles use 'whiskey.'

The Five Regions — and How They Taste Different

Speyside: Scotland's most prolific region. Rich, elegant, often sherried. Home to The Macallan, Glenfiddich, and Balvenie. Great starting point. Highlands: Diverse and expansive. Can range from light and floral to rich and peaty. Dalmore, Glenmorangie, and Dalwhinnie are Highlands expressions. Islay (pronounced EYE-luh): The peat powerhouse. Heavily smoky and medicinal. Laphroaig, Ardbeg, and Bruichladdich hail from here. Campbeltown: Small and historic region. Briny, complex. Glen Scotia and Springbank. Lowlands: Light, gentle, grassy. The most approachable for beginners. Auchentoshan and Glenkinchie.

Single Malt vs. Blended Scotch

Single Malt: Made from 100% malted barley at a single distillery. Showcases one distillery's character. Examples: The Macallan, Glenfiddich, Lagavulin. Blended Malt: A blend of single malts from multiple distilleries (no grain whisky). Blended Scotch: A blend of single malt and grain whiskies. Makes up about 90% of all Scotch sold. Examples: Monkey Shoulder, Johnnie Walker, Dewar's. Blended Scotch is not inferior — master blenders at Monkey Shoulder, for example, win international competitions against single malts.
