Two of the most debated value bourbons in the category. Wild Turkey 101 at $28. Buffalo Trace at $25-30 (when you can find it). Crystal and Roger have tasted both extensively and the answer might surprise you.
The Bottles
Wild Turkey 101: Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. High-rye mashbill (13% rye). 101 proof. Distilled by Eddie and Jimmy Russell — the longest-tenured father-son distilling duo in bourbon history. ~$28.
Buffalo Trace: Frankfort, Kentucky. Lower-rye mashbill. 90 proof. Mash Bill #1 (exact recipe undisclosed). Perpetually allocated — often hard to find at retail price. ~$28 when available.
The Proof Difference Matters More Than You Think
Wild Turkey 101 at 101 proof has a significant structural advantage over Buffalo Trace at 90 proof. More proof means more flavor concentration, more presence in cocktails, and more complexity in the glass. Buffalo Trace's 90 proof is a deliberate choice for approachability — but it costs you intensity.
Nose
Wild Turkey 101: bold vanilla, caramel, rye spice, oak, dried citrus. Big, assertive, unmistakably high-rye. Buffalo Trace: lighter vanilla, honey, caramel, subtle grain. Elegant and restrained compared to Wild Turkey's intensity.
Palate
Wild Turkey 101: spice-forward entry, black pepper, caramel mid-palate, long warming finish. This is bourbon that announces itself. Buffalo Trace: soft entry, honey and vanilla, light fruit, clean finish. Beautiful but quieter.
The Verdict
Wild Turkey 101 is the better bourbon at this price. It's more complex, more interesting, and more honest about what bourbon can be. Buffalo Trace is excellent — but its reputation has outrun its availability, meaning most people are paying $40-50 for a secondary market bottle that delivers $28 of value. At actual retail price they're equals. Wild Turkey 101 is always on the shelf at $28. That consistency is worth something.
