But quality vodka has tremendous nuance — the base ingredient, distillation method, and water source all contribute to subtle but real differences in texture, mouthfeel, and finish. What is Vodka?

Vodka is a neutral spirit distilled to a very high proof (typically 190 proof / 95% ABV) and then diluted back down to bottling strength (usually 40% ABV). In the US, it's defined as a spirit 'without distinctive character, aroma, taste, or color.' But that definition undersells the category — the base ingredients, water quality, and distillation process all create real, if subtle, differences.

Base Ingredients — Why They Matter

Vodka can be made from almost anything fermentable. Grain (wheat, rye, corn): Most common. Wheat gives silky, creamy texture (Belvedere). Rye gives a slightly spicy, crisp profile (Wyborowa).
