Vodka 101: Base Ingredients, Craft Producers & Why It's More Than a Mixer

Updated: May 23

💧 SPIRIT 101: VODKA

Vodka gets a bad reputation as a flavorless, neutral filler spirit. But quality vodka has tremendous nuance — the base ingredient, distillation method, and water source all contribute to subtle but real differences in texture, mouthfeel, and finish. This guide will change how you look at the category.

What is Vodka?

Vodka is a neutral spirit distilled to a very high proof (typically 190 proof / 95% ABV) and then diluted back down to bottling strength (usually 40% ABV). In the US, it's defined as a spirit 'without distinctive character, aroma, taste, or color.' But that definition undersells the category — the base ingredients, water quality, and distillation process all create real, if subtle, differences.

Base Ingredients — Why They Matter

Vodka can be made from almost anything fermentable. Grain (wheat, rye, corn): Most common. Wheat gives silky, creamy texture (Belvedere). Rye gives a slightly spicy, crisp profile (Wyborowa). Corn is clean and slightly sweet (Tito's, Black Momma Vodka). Potato: Rich, full-bodied, earthy mouthfeel. Luksusowa and Chopin are benchmarks. Grapes: Elegant and slightly fruity. Cîroc is the most famous. Sugarcane: Light and clean. Common in some Caribbean vodkas. Sweet Potato: Unique. Delta Dirt Vodka, reviewed on this show, is made from sweet potatoes grown on a Black-owned farm in Arkansas.

The Rise of Craft and Flavored Vodka

Craft vodka producers like Woodworks Distilling (4 Grain Vodka), Loft & Bear (wheat-based, philanthropic), and J. Rieger (wheat, pre-Prohibition heritage) are pushing the quality ceiling. Flavored vodka has also matured — Belvedere Organic Infusions uses zero added sugar and real botanicals, a far cry from artificial fruit vodkas. Barrel-rested vodka is an emerging style — Acre Golden Halo is a perfect example of what happens when vodka meets oak.
